McGill University

With some 300 buildings, more than 37,500 students, 215,000 living alumni and a reputation for excellence that reaches around the globe, McGill has carved out a spot among the world's great universities. As we celebrate the 190th anniversary of our founding, we invite you to explore some of the momentous achievements of McGill and McGillians. But while we're proud of what we've accomplished, our story is still being written, and new chapters are added all the time. If you're considering an academic career at McGill, we hope you'll one day count your own pages among them. Sir William Macdonald may have donated large sums of money to McGill University, but he shunned the spotlight. James W. Robertson, who was the federal government’s commissioner of agriculture and dairying in the 1890s, was a flamboyant showman. Together, this odd couple created what is today known as McGill’s Macdonald Campus—and revolutionized agricultural education in Canada. At the end of the 19th century, rural education was in shambles. Populations were too dispersed, teachers too scarce, and facilities too poorly maintained to effectively educate students. To turn the tide, Sir William established the Macdonald Manual Training Fund with Robertson’s assistance. Between 1903 and 1905, Macdonald-funded institutions appeared in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Prince Edward Island, and by 1907 more than 20,000 children were receiving the benefits of what became known as the “Macdonald-Robertson Movement.”

McGill is number one on the world stage as a research-intensive and student-centered university with the highest standards of achievement. Our future rests on attracting top talent in all segments of our population: professors, students, professionals, administrative and support staff. ### We are constantly looking at ways to attract, develop, retain and motivate talented individuals who see themselves as key contributors to achieving our goals. We offer great programs aimed at career development through a wide range of training and development courses and workshops. ### McGill is based on a culture of openness, fairness, respect and flexibility which is conducive to greater creativity. It also contributes to making our workplace exciting, engaging and a source of inspiration. ### Inspiration also stems from our two magnificent campuses. We were recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the Geo-Tourism Council of Montreal and the National Geographic Society in recognition of our efforts to sustain and enhance the environment, culture, heritage and geographical character of our downtown campus.
