About this College
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA

1867: The year the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign began. Chartered as the Illinois Industrial University, the University opened for business in 1868. Renamed the University of Illinois in 1885, it is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862. The University is in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana (total population 180,000) in east-central Illinois. Situated about 140 miles south of Chicago, 125 miles west of Indianapolis, and 180 miles northeast of St. Louis. The University of Illinois is a public research university, ultimately responsible to the citizens of Illinois and the Illinois General Assembly. Authority over the University is held by a Board of Trustees. A president is the chief executive officer for the university system, and each of three campuses is headed by a chancellor, vice chancellors who have campuswide responsibilities, and other administrators whose duties are delegated by the chancellor. Since its founding in 1867, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has earned a reputation as a world-class leader in research, teaching, and public engagement. A talented and highly respected faculty is the University’s most significant resource. Many are recognized for exceptional scholarship with memberships in such organizations as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering. Our faculty have been awarded Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, and the Fields Medal in Mathematics. The success of our faculty is matched by that of our alumni: 11 are Nobel laureates and another 18 have won Pulitzer Prizes.
